Asia Youngman is an award-winning Indigenous (Cree-Métis) filmmaker from Vancouver, Canada. Working in both narrative and documentary, she has directed projects for ESPN, Lifetime, PBS, History Channel, CBC, Bell Media, TVO, APTN and Telus. She co-directed and executive produced I’M JUST HERE FOR THE RIOT (2023) for ESPN’s acclaimed 30 for 30 series. The film premiered at Hot Docs Festival and it will be airing on ESPN and ESPN+ in 2024.
Asia was the recipient of the DGC BC Emerging Greenlight Award for her short film N’XAXAITKW (2022) which she wrote and directed. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won “Best Live Short” at the American Indian Film Festival and “Best Short” and “Best Direction in a Short” at the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival. She directed THIS INK RUNS DEEP (2019) which also premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film won “Best Documentary Short” at the Calgary International Film Festival and “Best Short” and “Best Director” at the Vancouver Short Film Festival. On the development front, Asia has an original series with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions and a television adaptation with Entertainment One. She is currently developing her feature narrative debut through the 2024 TIFF Writers’ Studio and the CHANEL Women’s Writers Network.
Named as one of Playback’s “10 to Watch”, Asia is an alumna of the TIFF Filmmaker Lab, TIFF Talent Accelerator, Canadian Academy Directors Program for Women and Berlinale’s DocSalon Toolbox Programme. She is a proud member of the Directors Guild of Canada and the Writers Guild of Canada. Asia is represented by The Gersh Agency in Los Angeles and Pacific Artists Management in Vancouver. Additionally, she is the owner of Visceral Village Productions which she founded in 2019.
